We’ve been living with our trusty nebulizer ever since the little man was diagnosed with asthma in 2011. Although it is bulky and noisy {Jared used to dread its buzzing sound when he was little and would always wake him up even in the wee hours of the morning}, I am thankful that we have one at home, especially after our scary asthma episode when he was just 3 years old. Even now that my son no longer gets attacks, it gives me peace of mind to know that we have a nebulizer handy in case we might need one.

We know that most nebulizers existing in the market now are bulky, big, and noisy, so when I was invited to an event that will showcase the smallest and lightest tabletop nebulizer, manufactured by a trusted brand, Omron, I knew I had to see it for myself.

#BreatheEasy With Omron Event

The Breathe Easy With Omron event was hosted by Omron, a global brand founded in 1933 and a leader in advanced automation, Sensing and Control Technology, and home healthcare. It was held at Stacy’s in Bonifacio Global City.

The event started with a presentation from Dr. Anjanette De Leon, MD, about the usual causes of asthma and other respiratory diseases along with the ways these conditions can be managed.

Asthma in children can begin at any age, with most children starting to show symptoms before they reach the age of 5. The airways of the lungs become irritated and swollen during an attack, making it difficult to breathe. Asthma, in fact, is the most common chronic respiratory ailment in infants and children, which also makes it the leading cause of pedia visits and hospitalizations.

Based on our experience, Jared’s profuse sweating is one of the things that triggers his attack. What triggers asthma varies from one person to the next. Some of the common asthma triggers in children include:

  • Colds or cough
  • sudden change in the weather or temperature
  • Pollen
  • Air pollution
  • Second-hand smoke
  • Dust mites
  • Pets like dogs and cats
  • Mold

Early detection of asthma is crucial in managing it well, especially if young children are involved. Some signs to look out for are coughing or wheezing, stuffy or runny nose, sudden feeling of weakness or tiredness, fever, or difficulty in breathing.

Fortunately, we are living in this day when treatments for asthma is readily available and accessible. Medicines such as Salbutamol or Ventolin provide immediate relief from asthma symptoms, whilst medication with corticosteroids {my son was prescribed with Montelukast during his worse attack, to be taken for 30 days} are prescribed for long-term control and severe attack prevention.

Here are a few ways you can help manage your child’s asthma and prevent future attacks:

  • Change your bed sheets weekly to prevent dust from building up
  • Clean regularly at home
  • Prevent mold spores by cleaning the kitchen, loo, and other areas in the house where molds are highly-likely to develop
  • Boost immune system by eating healthy and nutritious food
  • Exercise

Tip:

  • Swimming is an effective way to manage asthma based on our experience. We enrolled our little man to swimming class early in life to help keep his lungs healthy. Thankfully, he never had an attack since he started spending time in the pool during summer.

Demo of the Omron CompAir Nebulizer System NE-C801. The Omron representative also shares a common issue they encounter with users pricking the nebulizer tubing with needles whilst cleaning. She mentioned that this should be prevented as this will void the product warranty. The best practice is to bring your Omron nebulizer unit to a service center when you encounter a problem.

Using nebulizer is a doctor-recommended way of administering asthma medication for the following reasons:

  • Easily inhalation, especially amongst younger children and elderly
  • Less medicine wastage
