We are huge Samurai X fans and we still watch its re-runs at a local kids’ channel. We absolutely love Kenshin and enjoy watching his adventures with his friends over and over. {Hint: there is also an English-dubbed version available on Netflix ;)}. Of course, it would be awesome to read about his story, too. Good thing my sister has copies of these manga so this mum does not need to buy her own copy! 😀
We borrowed this book awhile back and the little man was pressuring me to finish it since his tita specifically instructed him to finish all the books he borrowed first before he can borrow the rest of the series. He managed to read this several times so the pressure is on this mum to finish this soon so he can read the other books. Good thing I managed to do just that one lazy Friday afternoon.
Here is what Goodreads has to say about this book:
Packed with action, romance and historical intrigue, Rurouni Kenshin is one of the most beloved and popular manga series worldwide. Set against the backdrop of the Meiji Restoration, it tells the saga of Himura Kenshin, once an assassin of ferocious power, now a humble rurouni, a wandering swordsman fighting to protect the honor of those in need.
A hundred and fifty years ago in Kyoto, amid the flames of revolution, there arose a warrior, an assassin of such ferocious power he was given the title Hitokiri: Manslayer. With his bloodstained blade, Hitokiri Battosai helped close the turbulent Bakumatsu period and end the reign of the shoguns, slashing open the way toward the progressive Meiji Era. Then he vanished, and with the flow of years became legend.
In the 11th year of Meiji, in the middle of Tokyo, the tale begins. Himura Kenshin, a humble rurouni, or wandering swordsman, comes to the aid of Kamiya Kaoru, a young woman struggling to defend her father’s school of swordsmanship against attacks by the infamous Hitokiri Battosai. But neither Kenshin nor Battosai are quite what they seem…
If you love the animated series, I bet you will also enjoy reading the printed version where the animation was based. We are looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
Rurouni Kenshin Volume 1 {#1-3} VizBig Edition is my 11th book for my 2019 Reading Challenge. Currently, I am 6 books behind so I hope I will be able to read some more, especially that a number of holidays are up and coming this August. How far along are you with the challenge? Happy reading! ?
