Parenting 101: 7 Ways To Raise Eco-Friendly Children

Raising eco-friendly children has never become a necessity until today. With all the environmental issues we are facing, it is a must that we raise children to be more conscious about nature and the planet.

Although getting children to care about their surrounding may seem like a daunting task, it is highly doable. In fact, there are many simple ways to nurture the little ones’ interest in nature. Here are a few easy ways to help you in raising eco-friendly children:

Show them how to Save Water

Children learn by imitation and the best way to teach them to do something is by showing them. When you lecture them about saving water, show them how it is done. Show them how to save water by using a glass when brushing their teeth. You can also demonstrate the proper way of using the shower and saving water while taking a bath.

Adopt a Pet

Adopting a pet is an effective way to encourage empathy and responsibility in children. It is also a practical way to get them to care for nature. It might be a major decision for the family, but you can start by adopting a hamster or a rabbit. You can move on to adopting bigger pets, like a cat or a dog, when your child is older.

Parenting 101: Helping A Child Cope With Grief

Losing a parent or sibling is considered one of the 10 most stressful life events on the Holmes Rahe scale. Children who lose a loved one can
experience a wide range of emotions including sadness, anger and denial. Some experience ‘survivor guilt’, which can occur when a sibling is lost to an illness. It is important for family members who remain to work hard to ensure that children are protected against depression, anxiety, and other mental conditions in the long term, by employing positive parenting strategies, creating a safe environment in which to mourn, and helping them build key cognitive and behavioral skills ~ if necessary, with the help of a skilled therapist.

How does Positive Parenting Work?

According to a study published in the journal Professional Psychology, “Positive parenting by the surviving parent is the single most consistently supported malleable mediator of the adjustment of parentally bereaved children.” Of course, this also applies when the person lost to the family is another child. Positive parenting involves open communication {in which children are free to express how they feel, even when their emotions are negative, as well as to ask questions}; a balancing kindness and discipline; and spending time with children to help them find meaning or at least feel a sense of regeneration following their loss.Parents who are at a loss with respect to finding the right balance between acceptance and setting healthy routines and limits, should seek the help of a therapist, who can help in this area, as well as with cognitive-behavioral therapy {CBT} techniques.

ParentTown: A New Parenting App On The Block

Mums nowadays are fortunate to have a number of resources for parenting and motherhood available online. Back in the days, I do not have regular access to the internet while pregnant with the little man so I relied mostly on books and publications that tackle pregnancy and parenting. I was also fortunate to have fellow pregnant mum friends whom I can talk to about my concerns and worries as a newbie mum when I finally gave birth to my little bundle of joy. Later on, I also discovered this wonderful online community of mums, which is a treasure trove of awesome ideas and clever parenting and mummyhood tips.

ParentTown App Menu

The online mum community I signed up for years ago was an avenue to meet other mums who have similar concerns and issues. I have learned a lot of nifty tips about planning my son’s first birthday party, children allergies, as well as where to get the most fad yet affordable clothes for children or one of those 12ax7 tubes for your musically-inclined kids , from other mums who’ve been there before me. It has really been very helpful in my motherhood journey that is why I am delighted to share with you today a new parenting app that I am sure you will find most interesting.

ParentTown is a new and free app especially made with parents in mind. Here is a brief description from their website:

ParentTown is a platform for mums and dads for anything parenting. Ask a question, and the growing community of experts, parents and parents-to-be will share their experiences. If you have a sensitive question post anonymously. Have a cute baby picture, use our Photo Booth feature and share with our closely knit community.

We also host live sessions with some of the best parenting experts around you. We aim to make your journey from pregnancy to parenting a smooth ride.

To start your ParentTown experience, you may download it from Google Play {for android} and from the App Store {for iOS}. You may also access the ParentTown website using your Facebook or Gmail accounts.

The app is pretty straight-forward and the interface is easy to use. A parent can conveniently access all the information he might need or require from the app with its very organized and systematic menu.

I’ve downloaded the app recently and here are 3 things I love about it:
