I received an interesting parcel from the mail last Monday + look what I’ve got ~ another book to review. + for a welcome change, it is a children’s books this time! 🙂

The Golden Pathway, written by award-winning author Donna M. McDine, is a 22-page hardbound book  {I finished it in a matter of minutes :)} that depicts the story of slavery + the Underground Railroad in America back in the days. This is A Literary Classics Award Winning Book + also has the Seal of Approval by the Children’s Literary Classics.

Synopsis:

Raised in a hostile environment where abuse occurs daily, David attempts to break the mold + befriends the slave, Jenkins, owned by his Pa. Fighting against extraordinary times + beliefs, David leads Jenkins to freedom with no regard for his own safety + possible consequences dealt out by his Pa.

About the Author:

Donna McDine is an award-winning children’s author, Honorable Mention in the 77th + two Honorable Mentions in the 78th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competitions. Donna’s stories + features have been published in many print + online publications + her interest in American History resulted in writing + publishing The Golden Pathway. She is currently working on her second book, The Hockey Agony, which will be published soon.

The book tells about the interesting journey David has to make to be able to help the slave, Jenkins, flee to freedom from slavery + abuse from David’s own father. Follow the story as his day unfolds figuring out how to finally set the slave free in between helping him whenever his own father punishes him. The classic story of a self-less little man who only wants to help a friend in need.

The Golden Pathway is a straight-forward + heart-warming story that will tug at every reader’s heartstrings. For a delicate topic, with suggested age reader of 8 to 12, I love the way the author was surprisingly able to narrate it in a ways that its targeted audience will understand + relate to. References on phrases + terms + culture pertaining to that specific era also gives its readers a glimpse of how things used to be in those day. It achieves its purpose perfectly, to educate its readers about slavery + to invoke in them that feeling of standing up against it no matter what.

one of the lovely one-page illustrations

I give The Golden Pathway 5 bookmarks {which is the highest in my book}, as it not only aims to entertain its readers but educate them on a very important lesson in history, as well. Add to that the beautiful illustration by K.C. Snider, which only made the book even more enjoyable. I also love that it is just long enough for one reading session with your children + I cannot wait to read this to my little man when he gets a little bigger.
