a lowdown on menopause

women health, menopause, women issues

I know I am still a decade or so away from menopause {I am still in my early thirties, after all!} but I have heard tales about menopause that led me to researching about it online for more information. I know I have wished on a few occasions, mostly during uncomfortable days when I had my period, for menopause to come to me sooner, but after a bit of reading, am going to have to change my mind + wished for menopause to come when I am in my 60’s!

What is Menopause

Is the end of the fertile phase of a woman’s life which usually occurs to women in the late 40’s + early 50’s. It is the permanent end of the primary function of the human ovaries which is the ripening + release of ova + the release of hormones that cause the creating of the uterine lining + its subsequent shedding, we refer in lay man’s terms as the menses or periods.

Some of the symptoms of menopause include:

  • anxiety
  • hair loss
  • depression
  • decrease of libido
  • headaches
  • sleep disorders
  • worsening allergies
  • weight gain
  • memory lapses
  • mood swings
  • difficulty concentrating
  • digestive problems
Apart from these, there are about two dozens other menopause symptoms, the most common of which is hot flashes, or that feeling of intense heat, normally characterized by rapid heartbeat + sweating, + usually last from two to thirty minutes at every occurrence. I know the list looks ugly + to think that you might be experiencing some or most of them in the future is really a dreadful thought.
It was a good thing, though, that you can now have access to numerous conventional + alternative treatment for hot flashes, as well as treatments to alleviate the symptoms of menopause, making it a comfortable transition to any woman who is experiencing it. A few of these treatments include:
  • hormone replacement therapy which relieves many menopause symptoms, although the lowest does is recommended as higher dose might pose threats to other medical conditions including higher risk of breast cancer, stroke + dimentia
  • selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors {SSRI’s} which are found to be most effective in alleviating hot flashes + are more commonly used to treat depression
  • selective estrogen receptor modulators {SERM}
For those who are a tad wary of medical treatments, like myself, you can always try a more natural approach in combating menopause. Some choices of which include:
  • Changing your dietary habit + eat foods like soy, which is rich in isoflavones
  • Avoiding caffeine, hot + spicy foods, as well as alcohol
  • Considering natural food supplements + medication. Check out amberen.com for more information about hot flashes + Amberen, a 100% natural treatment for it. 1. I hit menopause at age 45 and the hot flashes were horrible! Up until about 3 years ago (after 5+ years of flashes)I still get them but not nearly as bad as before. That was the old symptom I had…except for the weight gain…groans…but it wasn’t all that much.

    1. I can only imagine who cumbersome it must’ve been for you to experience all those hot flashes + for 3 years, too! I am glad they are gone + the weight gain isn’t much 🙂 Thanks for dropping by 🙂
