How To Keep Children Preoccupied During Rainy Days

The recent habagat paired with typhoon Maring allowed for our unintended house arrest. Classes were suspended in our city and even when they’re not, I wouldn’t brave the heavy rains and risk for Jared to catch any disease. Unwilling as we were, we have no choice but to revel in our time cooped up at home until the storm and the inclement weather passed.

It is a good thing that I found a perfect preoccupation for the little man, the games and apps on my mobile phone. But if truth be told, I’d rather he bury his nose in one of his books than to enjoy any of those games {I know I am such a party pooper :(} Good thing he agreed to play only for a few hours each day and that I discovered this kid-friendly game of memory and puzzles with his favorite Cars 2 characters in it.

The first two days he found joy in watching a number of his favorite cartoons on the telly but on the third day, he suddenly lost interest and wanted to do something else. We occupied ourselves for a bit watching the big pitter patter of the rain from our window, we also took the sudden rest from the downpour to check out the water building up on the streets just in front of the garage. The little man is fascinated with the rainy and those muddy puddles.

I actually have a number of activities in mind to keep my little man occupied, like storytelling or coloring or playing with his clay. {If you are a mum of an impressionable almost-4-year-old, you will be well off to have the Smart Parenting’s 150+ Fun & Creative Activities For Kids so you will never run out of ideas, and pray that your children like them and cooperates :)}

While keeping myself occupied keeping abreast of the current weather condition and the progress of relief operations in different key cities in the country, Jared had a sudden inspiration and went to his bin of old toys, unearthed his partially-damaged toy train and decided to play with it. Most of the parts are still okay even though the train itself won’t work anymore. I had to repair a few carriages with a double-sided tape and off the little man went to play with it!

I wonder what else will catch Jared’s fancy next, in the meantime, I am just glad I have Minion Rush and other mobile games to keep him occupied during those boring days.

How about you, what do you do to keep your little bosses occupied?  🙂

  1. When my kids are younger this is a real challenge hehehe.

Now naman ang challenge ko is how to get their attention to go away with the gadgets hayyy.

  2. Ang laki na ni Jared, sis. Belated happy birthday sa inyong mag-mommy. 🙂

Miss ko ang ganitong stage ng mga bagets ko. Ang dali lang nila ma-entertain ng favorite tv shows nila, books at toys, unlke ngayon na may kanya kanya na silang trip.

    1. thanks so much sis. Oo nga sobra dali lang libangin, kaso naman gusto on ang tv the entire day kahit di sya nanonood, background noise habang naglalaro ng mga toys nya! 😀 They grow up so fast, am sure mami-miss ko din ito pag malaki na si Jared kaya enjoy ko na lang while I can 🙂

  3. My children are really grown up now.. This is why we really should play with our kids at this age. During the long vacation due to bad weather, sad to say, we’re all occupied in our own online business. My two students were busy having their assignments online and the mom with online stuff.
Your handsome man, Jared , is a big boy now. Ang bilis ng panahon!

    1. thanks mommy! ang bilis talaga ng panahon! a few years from now at meron na din akong teener…gadgets are my new enemy, thankfully the only gadget we have at home is the ipod + the mobile phone. the little one is so adept he knows how to play most of the installed games + would even teach me how to play some of them. if i would have my way, i do not like for him to spend too much time in front of the telly or his mobile games….

  4. as a parent, it is always a challenge on how to keep your children entertained. preparing some activities indoors is a very great idea..

there is also the temptation of just letting them watch kids tv shows for hours or letting them play with gadgets. but I have learned that a child should only be allowed 30 minutes maximum of tv and gadgets and computer games. so our creativity is put to a challenge but it is a good way of training kids discipline.

it also a fun activity to play or go out in the rain and go exploring.. just make sure they proper rain gear on so they won’t get sick. 😀

    1. it really is quite challenging, my son would just want the telly on all day if he can have his way. there are many times when i cannot help but given, on other days, especially when the weather is good, i opt to spend time outdoors just so we can avoid the “idiot box”
