Fueling the little one’s passion for reading and learning is something this mum is committed to. But with his penchant for the telly and his gadget and games, especially during weekends, I need to work overtime to distract him away from them and quick! That is why I am always on the look out for any materials that would pique his interest and any book that would encourage him to read even more.

I have read a lot about curated subscription boxes for children that include books, worksheets, and other educational materials but most of them are not available here. How I wish someone will come up with a local version so mums here can easily subscribe and have them delivered straight to our doorsteps!

I think you can very well imagine how excited I was when I discovered the all-new BuriBox.  I was even more delighted when I found out about their introductory promo. Can you imagine getting a box filled with books, arts and crafts supplies and activity sheets and I only had to pay for the shipping! I wasted no time and subscribed to the little man’s very first BuriBox!

BuriBox in a nutshell

The BuriBox is especially-designed by Adarna House for the Filipino family to build a library of stories and a treasure trove of educational activities at home.

The box comes in 2 types:

  • Toddler Boxwith 4-5 kid-tested preschool books and multiple activities and worksheets for children aged 3-5
  • Young Reader Boxfilled with 5 award-winning books and multiple activities and worksheets for the beginning readers 6-8 years of age

I opted for the latter as it is more suited for my young bookworm. Each box is priced at Php799/month, inclusive of free delivery around Metro Manila! Initially, they only accept orders from Metro Manila, but I know you’d be interested to know that they know deliver to anywhere in the Philippine! I paid Php150 for  provincial shipping. When I subscribed, they were only accepting Paypal payments but I do hope they can include other modes of payment as not most people have a Paypal account.

Subscription to BuriBox is easy as pie using their website. You can also unsubscribe anytime you like, in case you opted not to get a box every month. I might just do the same since I also purchase books for the little man from different sources from time to time and scour the world wide web for printables, activities and worksheets that fit Jared’s current interests and inclination.

Unboxing the November BuriBox

The BuriBox was delivered to us in this cardboard box, sealed and protected from the rigors of shipping and handling. The green-and-yellow box inside has a cute, eye-catching design and mind you, the little man believed the illustration on the box was him. Do you think you can spot the resemblance?  ;-)

The BuriBox box comes with two kinds of learning materials ~ the story books and the activities. It also comes with arts and crafts supplies needed to finish each activity sheet.

The Story Books

the 5 story books in our November Buribox
  1. Si Ching Na Takot sa Dilim ~ this book is about a young boy, Ching, who is afraid of the dark. It tells the kids how he survives a major blackout in the neighborhood and inspires young book lovers to use their imagination.
  2. Alpabetong Filipino ~ a lovely first book on the Filipino alphabet that features sample words beginning with each letter. This is compiled by no less that Virgilio S. Almario, a National Artist in Literature who is also known as the Father of Modern Children Literature in the country.
  3. Si Putot ~ talks about the uniqueness of each person and teaches children to build on their strength
  4. Mario’s Special Day ~ this book is all about Mario’s special day and encourages young readers to use their imagination. This also comes in 2 languages, English and Filipino, so it feels like getting two book in one!
  5. Ang Mabait Na Kalabaw ~ this book is about a carabao who is a good role model. Apart from promoting positive values, this book teaches the little ones to count from 1-13. This also comes in 2 languages, English and Filipino.

The Activities

the Activities included in our November Buribox
  1. Cut-Out Shadow Puppets ~ an  ideal activity for developing fine motor skills as well as promoting creativity
  2. Letter Dice ~ allows for increase in letter and number knowledge, as well as enhances a child’s vocabulary and writing skills
  3. Foldable Animals  ~ is a hit for kids who love animals! It also enhances fine motor skills, spatial reasoning, as well as increases focus and attention span.
  4. Magkulay Tayo! ~ helps develop hand-and-eye coordination, a precursor in writing. It increases focus and helps in color, line, shape and form recognition. It also promotes relaxation and patience, especially for overly-energetic little boys like mine.
  5. Espesyal Na Araw ~ a fun activity that promotes reading comprehension as well as help children enhance their ability to relate prior experiences with events and situations in the story.
  6. Mga Nawawalang Buntot ~ This activity helps increase the little ones’ awareness on attention to details, as well as develop their critical thinking skills. books, from my mailbox, mum finds, tot schooling, educational products for children, books for children, subscription boxes for children
  7. Glitter Name Activity Sheet ~ This allows for self-expression and encourages children to creatively express themselves

The Materials

books, from my mailbox, mum finds, tot schooling, educational products for children, books for children, subscription boxes for children

  1. A box of crayons
  2. A bottle of Glue
  3. A small tube of Glitter
  4. A pair of Scissors
  5. Acetate {unfortunately, this one is missing from our box}
  6. Parent’s Guide {the “For Parents” envelope}

These items are all neatly packed in a plastic wrap  inside the box so they arrived home safe and sound. For this, I give 10 points to the packing team at the BuriBox headquarter!

My little man wasted no time in examining the contents of his box as soon as I opened it! He went on to label each book with his name and thumb through each of the story to discover the wonders within. He was also very excited to finish the activities at the end of each book. We have yet to begin with the activity sheets but I am betting the little one will also tackle each with enthusiasm and gusto! He was particularly enamored with Ching and all the creatures he saw in the dark!

Why I Think You’d Love BuriBox

It has books and activity sheets, not to mention arts and crafts supplies, all in one box, so what’s not to like, really? But here are a number of things I love about the BuriBox:

  1. I love that we finally have a local subscription box that is tailor-fit for the Filipino children and families
  2. I love that it comes with award-winning Adarna books, making it easier to build a library of Filipino books at home. Adarna House is the top children’s book publisher in the country committed to the development of the Filipino children’s love for learning. Their books are made by the best writers and illustrators for children in the Philippines. Most Adarna books also come in both English and Filipino, allowing for children to learn both languages at the same time.
  3. I love that the box also comes with activity sheets designed and carefully-selected by education experts to supplement what the kids learned in the books while giving them opportunities to harness their abilities and skills
  4. I love the convenience it gives to busy mums and families in providing award-winning and aged-appropriate books and activities for children to enjoy at home

Most budget-conscious and frugal mums would think Php799 per month for a box of books and learning materials for the kiddos is rather steep, so I do hope BuriBox will come up with a smaller box that would cater to them. They could probably skip the arts and crafts supplies as most households with little children or school-aged kids are sure to have them on hand. They can also further reduce the price of each subscription box by providing a link to a site where parents can download the activity sheets instead of providing printed copies. Most homes have printers nowadays so they can easily print the downloaded activity sheets anytime at home.

Still, I think BuriBox at Php799/month is worth every penny considering its many contents. So, will I subscribe to Buribox next month? Most definitely! But if they can find a way to reduce the price for the next subscription box, all the better!

I give BuriBox      ! This is perfect for home-schooling mums and for mums like me who are constantly in search for educational materials the little ones can use at home to augment what they learn in school. It is also ideal for mums and kids who would like to add more Filipino books to their growing library at home. I think they will also make perfect Christmas gifts for the kids, nieces, nephews, and inaanaks!
