Being able to drive is not obligatory once you have kids, but it sure makes life a lot easier. Mums have numerous responsibilities and being able to multi task helps. Once upon a time, everything we needed was local to us: the doctor, shops, schools, and friends and family. Communities were small and we didn’t need to be able to drive. If we had to travel anywhere further away, there were buses or trains. Today, it is a very different world out there. Communities are far more fragmented and family is likely to be living hundreds of miles away rather than in the adjacent street. So if you have never learned to drive, here are five reasons why you should look at taking some lessons.

Emergencies

A sick child is a mum’s worst nightmare. It is bad enough dealing with your own illness, but when your child is sick, the stress is tenfold. It isn’t much fun taking a sick child to the doctor on public transport, especially if the doctor’s surgery is miles away. Buses are not always regular and if you have more than one child to deal with, the whole exercise will soon turn into a nightmare. It is even more serious if your child takes a sudden turn for the worse. You could call the emergency services, but it is often quicker to go straight to A&E. In this instance, being able to drive could be a lifesaver. A quick online search for driving lessons Manchester will give you a number of reputable driving schools around the area.

Shopping Trips

Imagine you have spent all afternoon shopping with the kids. You picked up the groceries and managed the long journey home without incident. The trouble is, after unpacking the shopping, you realise you have forgotten something important. If you can drive, it isn’t a problem because you can pop back out. Not being able to drive makes it a lot harder.

Fun Days Out

It is so much easier planning days out when you can drive. With a car, you can pack everything you need, including a spare change of clothes, food, and drinks. You can set off whenever it suits and come home when you have had enough. Using public transport is a lot more restrictive, plus you may not be able to reach out of the way places very easily.

Public Transport is a Pain

Let’s be honest here: trains and buses are a major pain when you have toddlers and babies. Neither are very child friendly and asking a bus driver to help you with a pram is unlikely to elicit a favourable response. It is so much easier being able to drive!

The School Run

In an ideal world, your child’s school would be within walking distance, but with school places heavily oversubscribed in many areas, you will probably have to travel a fair distance to your child’s school. Driving there is not great, but at least it’s quicker than catching a bus or walking three miles.

Learning to drive is an important skill, so make sure your child practices hard and makes use of sites like Top Tests today, and start the journey towards independence. You won’t regret it!

Mum’s Two Cents

Learning how to drive should be a very handy skill to learn, especially for mums. It will be very convenient as we go through our day-to-day tasks, as well as afford us improved mobility. If there is one other skill I would like to learn this year, it would be driving. It should be quite an achievement to drive the little man to and from his daily activities and it would also give me a sense of accomplishment to learn something new.

Do you drive mums, and if not, would you love to learn?

  1. My mom does not know how to drive because she is scared of it. She did try to learn from a driving school. Now we have three drivers in the family so I think it’s okay even if she doesn’t know how to properly drive a car.

    1. The road can really be quite a scary place for a newbie driver, danger is lurking at every turn and corner so I do not blame your mum. Good that you have a lot of drivers in the family, should come handy on occasions, right?

  2. I agree.. moms should know how to drive so in case of emergency, they can drive the car on their own! I think it is very convenient too because this can save her time and money especially if she needs to go somewhere! Oh and I find it cool to see a mother driving! Too bad my mom is afraid of driving

  3. You are right about all this. I used to be very dependent on my husband when it comes to driving. Then, his eyesight has gone bad, so I needed to learn how to drive. I didn’t realize it was so convenient.

  4. My motivation to pass my road test and get my driver’s license is my Summer Babe who was 4 years old that time. There is no bus pick-up/drop off that time. Hubby’s work schedule is chaotic. The only way she can go to Pre-K is if I pass my road test which I did. Now I can go anywhere I wanted to go. I just need to extra careful especially I just had the car accident.

    1. I read about your accident, mum, good thing you did not get hurt. It is true, we ought to be extra careful when driving around, especially with the little ones in tow.

    2. I read about your accident, mum, good thing you did not get hurt. It is true, we ought to be extra careful when driving around, especially with the little ones in tow.

  5. I agree, driving is a skill a mum should have. I am scheduled to take driving lessons next month. It will be a huge help for my husband if I can go here and there without bothering him. But honestly, I’m a bit scared too.

  6. Sometimes, we mothers, just don’t have a choice sis. 🙂 I remember rebuking the idea of my hubby to send me to driving school to learn how to drive. I was so adamant and I really hated driving, even when I was in Manila. Unfortunately, we moved to a suburb and had to drive miles to reach our work. I WAS LEFT WITHOUT A CHOICE especially when hubby had to go on long vacation leaves and he would leave the car to me. I could pay and waste money using a cab or save money and drive. I guess the choice was pretty obvious.

Necessity drives us to drive. Pun intended. 🙂

    1. I feel you, what with all the accidents happening on the road. I am frightened myself, but I still think it is a handy skill for mums to learn. Hopefully, I’d learn how to drive real soon.

  7. I used to think that having 1 driver in the family (usually the husband) is enough until I realized it can be very difficult if that person is sick or busy, so I decided to learn driving as well.

  8. My mom learnt to drive only because she wanted to take me out whenever she wanted. That was her little dream, to drive her kid in bike, dropping them off where they needed to be. She was ecstatic when she learnt to do it. For joy or emergencies, it’s always better to learn.

    1. Driving is one of the things I would also like to learn. It would be convenient if I can bring my little man to just about anywhere. Although, I would prefer walking whenever possible, to reduce carbon footprint.
