Corrective Vision Options For Kids

parenting 101, eye health, children health

One of the most common issues for parents of young children to face is how to go about correcting the vision of their children. While some children are fortunate enough to have naturally perfect – or near perfect – vision, the majority of people can benefit from some form of corrective vision. And, these days, there are three main ways to correct imperfect natural vision: glasses, contact lenses, and surgical correction. So which of these three methods is best for your child? Ultimately, this depends largely on your situation and that of your child, but here are a few general guidelines, pros and cons for each method of corrective vision.

Glasses

Eyeglasses are perhaps the easiest means of correcting vision in a young child. Generally, all that is required is a single appointment with an eye doctor, after which you and your child can pick out a frame. Then your child will soon have his or her own pair of glasses to help with perfect vision. As far as simplicity and vision alone go, glasses are a perfect option. However, they can also hold some children back in certain ways. If your child is particularly active, or prone to losing or breaking things, glasses may not be ideal, as they are easy to break or lose, and difficult to play sports or be particularly active in.

Contact Lenses

Some parents worry that contact lenses can be difficult to handle for young children, and indeed in some cases this is true. However, contact lens companies like Acuvue now offer a wide variety of different lenses designed for comfort, as well as to correct specific vision problems. The drawback is that some young children are not responsible enough with cleaning and caring for contact lenses. However, if your child is responsible and comfortable in contact lenses, they may offer the most convenient means of correcting vision, as they offer improvement in sight without any of the physical limitations of glasses.

Corrective Surgery

Finally, there is corrective surgery, such as permanent lens implants or LASIK, which are becoming more and more popular each year. While these means of corrective vision provide the most natural feeling corrections, and are becoming increasingly safe and reliable, they are generally not recommended for children. One reason for this is that your children’s eyes may still be developing, and performing corrective surgery on underdeveloped eyes can be a bad idea. That said, younger people are having success with eye surgeries, so when your children reach more physically mature ages this is something they can consider.

caring for your toddlers pearly whites

parenting 101, tips + tricks, children health
the little man “brushing” his teeth {9 months old}

Caring for our toddlers milk teeth is one of our priorities as mums. Taking care for their pearly whites earlier on will, after all, pave the way for strong + healthy permanent teeth in the future + will save us from the unnecessary trouble, + toothache, when they are bigger. Just think of these scenarios:

  • Your little one cannot focus on his activities because of a nagging toothache, making him irritable often
  • He misses a few goodnight’s sleep while nursing a toothache
  • He has to be absent from school because the toothache turns from annoying to intolerable
Much like me, I bet you wouldn’t want your precious little ones to experience any of these situations. That is why we have got to find ways to instill in them a good oral hygiene even when they are still in diapers, they will bring these habits through their grown up age + will save us all the drama, not to mention the exorbitant dental fees!
Here are a few things you can try:
  • Brush your little one’s chompers regularly. You might have to help them with this, as, based on my experience, they would simply refuse to put the brush in their mouths + would rather play with it!
  • Do not put your baby to sleep with a bottle. Sleeping with a bottle is a surefire way to having cavities + other tooth problems. So it is best to brush their teeth before bedtime. For the little ones who ask for a bottle a few times in the wee hours of the night/morning, it is best to brush their teeth as soon as they awoke or keep those mouth wipes handy.
  • Curb the sweet tooth. As much as you can, do not encourage his sweet tooth + refrain from giving him cookies + sweets as treats. Instead, let him much on fruits + vegetables.
  • Bring him to a pediatric dentist. As soon as his first tooth erupts, you can bring your little tot to a pediatric dentist to have his chomper checked. The dentist will also provide you with tips + tricks to care for your little one’s teeth. Looking for a pediatric dentist can be quite tricky, though. I have consulted with my little man’s pedia + she recommended one located in Manila. She said this particular dentist is an expert in the field + it is best to consult with them regarding my son’s pearly whites. I know it is most convenient to find one locally, one that is  near you, like that dentist Melbourne-based, for example, if you happen to be in the area, but since I really had no choice, I might as well try my luck with this one. I have yet to call for an appointment, though.

Oh well, I hope you find something of interest in these toddler tooth-caring tips. I know it is easier said than done, especially with a very uncooperative toddler who’d rather flourish his toothbrush like a wand than put it in his mouth, but babies + kids they say are creatures of habit + am sure they will get the hang of it soon enough! We just have to guide them all the way through! 😉

of colorkiddos + colorectal kids

mum for a cause, ColorKiddos, children health,

This is actually the first time I have heard about colorectal defects in children. I cannot imagine how these children’s parents would have a lot of sleepless nights caring for their babies with colostomy bag atteched on their sides + just worrying sick when their little ones will get better. That is why when I read about ColorKiddos, I just knew I need to write about them here.

What is colorectal defects?

Colorectal defects or anorectal anomalies are medical conditions that affects the structure of the anus or rectum. A child born with anorectal problems have some sort of anorectal malformation or deformative feature in the anus or rectum. Some of these known anorectal anomalies include: Imperforate anus {malformed rectum}, proctitis {inflammation of the anus + the lining of the rectum}, or anal bleeding.  Known treatments for these conditions include surgery {in case of imperforate anus} or corticosteroids suppository for proctitis.

What is ColorKiddos?

ColorKiddos was borne out of a mother’s love for her daughter + her desire to help other kids who suffer the same condition as her child once did.  You can read about their own journey with colorectal defects here. She aims to help these children live better lives in the future + to spread the word about colorectal defects to increase awareness + hopefully to get more people to be involved + help out.

To know more about ColorKiddos + to support their causes, simply click on the link above or follow the ColorKiddos Facebook Page.

Incidentally, Lovingly, Mama is also hosting a giveaway to help spread the word about ColorKiddos. $30 Paypal cash is up for grabs. Check out the giveaway post for more details.
