a plumbing emergency

home

If I know a thing or two about plumbing, I never would have panicked the last time we had a minor plumbing emergency. I was just happily taking a bath after a long day’s work + after I have put my little man to sleep for his afternoon nap, when I noticed that instead of going down the drain, like it would normally do, the water is building up in a puddle on the bathroom floor instead. I thought there was just a temporary glitch {read: something stuck in the drain} but long before I finished my bath, the water formed into a little flood inside the bathroom.

To say that I was worried is an understatement, I was actually panicked + my mind was running 360 degrees on overdrive, thinking what I’d do if in case the water flows through the kitchen towards the living room. In my mind’s eye I was already thinking of the quickest way to move my sofa + the little man’s toys onto a higher, safe place! + wondering where I can call a 24/7 plumber to help sort out my predicament! What can I do, it comes with being a mum, I guess! 🙂

Anyways, the water did not really flowed out to the kitchen or to any other part of the house, + although it flooded the bathroom floor for a few hours, all it took was a single call to my landlord to get things fixed! The bathroom was in tiptop shape before I went to bed that night.

Lesson learned: first of all, do not panic, as panicking accomplish nothing! It helps to keep an alert  mind especially in times like this. Secondly, make sure to keep the drain free from other ickie stuff like loose hair strand + the likes. Install hair catcher if you haven’t + repair the old ones you have, in case it was broken, like mine. You can also keep a plumber’s hotline on your phonebook since you never know when it might come handy. As the old adage goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

this mum needs help

motherhood, home, home chores, mum is sick

I feel like every bit of me just screams to take a break. If I could, I’d sleep for 3 days straight just so I can regain the energy + the hours of sleep deprivation that I suffered when me + the little man got sick recently.   Am just glad that apart from slight coughs + cold, + occasional throwing up here + there, the little man is back to his usual rowdy self + that apart from a bit swelling on the inside of my cheek, my jaw is now back to normal + is feeling a lot better.

+ even though we have not fully recovered yet, there are loads of home chores to be dealt with, starting with the mountain of laundry that have piled up over the days I wasn’t feeling up to the task. Although my sister, Cel, was too kind enough to volunteer to do most of Jared’s laundry, I have still quite a mountain on my laundry basket which I tackled as soon as I was able to. Now it left me more tired + dying to take a few day’s break. If only it were possible. Mothers don’t take offs remember? We keep a 25/7 job, every single day of the week.

During these times, I cannot help but wish I have extra arms + hands to do a number of tasks at the same time or that I have a house help that can pitch in whenever I am feeling off, who will do the laundry + cook hearty meals for me + the little man + who will keep watch of him while he sleeps so I can tinker on my blogs to work on my backlogs late at night, or maybe a home vacuum cleaners from  Miele so that I won’t have to sweep the floor! Oh well, am going to have to save for that + a house help is really not in my list of priorities at the moment. Maybe I’d just work on keeping me healthy so that I won’t have to deal with sickness that starts this whole thing altogether!

Teaching Moms about Woodwork

home, motherhood

Home improvements are typically done by the man of the house since it requires material handling and effort. But this doesn’t stop moms on trying on this task. Woodworking or carpentry has become relatively easy because of the availability of different power tools. If you want to improve the look of your home without having to spend a lot of money all you need to do is learn the tricks in woodwork and have the right kind of materials and tools to get you started.

If you are planning to do some woodwork around the house, the most important thing is to have a project plan. Have an idea on what needs to be done or an area that you want to work on. This will help you get organized . Do your own research about woodwork. Know what are the essentials in terms of tools and where can you buy them. A lot of home improvement stores offer a wide range of power tools to choose from depending on the project. There are also a number of online stores where you can purchase tools and materials usually at a lower price.

As a beginner, you may want to avoid the advanced power tools that are used by professional builders and contractors. Invest on the basics such as hammer, chisel and a square. Look for a table where you can neatly organize everything that you’ll need for the woodwork. Start working on small and easy carpentry projects and move on to more complicated ones as you get more familiar with the tools and techniques.

Remember that safety should always comes first when it comes to woodwork. Do not start working on a project without having the proper safety gadgets like gloves, safety glasses and a mask to keep dirt and dust away. Learn about simple woodwork techniques online or by reading some home and garden magazines.
