Shell + Domex Launches Deep Clean Week

pr, announcement, mum for a cause

Pilipinas Shell today launched its Deep Clean Week at retail stations around the country, partnering with Unilever through Domex under its 1M Clean Toilets Movement.

Traveling during peak seasons introduces heightened risks of acquiring diseases. Oftentimes, gas stations along major roads become the necessary stop-over points for commuters and private motorists, resulting in crowded, busy use of retail station facilities. In fact, customers are more upset by failures that inconvenience them directly, such as dirty pumps, slippery floors, and dirty toilets.

To address this, Shell has partnered with Unilever through Domex for Deep Clean Week, a project to clean up Shell stations around the country, and the 1 Million Clean Toilets program, an advocacy that aims to raise awareness on the need for proper toilet sanitation and to help improve access to clean toilets. Domex wants to empower and inspire Filipinos to clean their own toilets with specialized cleaners in an effort to reduce the incidence of diseases that are related to lack of proper toilet sanitation.

“Deep Clean Week is about spotting areas of the station that are not part of the everyday cleaning cycle. Building on the enthusiasm from 2013, I am excited to launch this year’s Deep Clean Week. We’ve listened to your feedback from last year and have refreshed a number of our tools to make this year’s programme even more successful and truly impactful,” said Oying Yam, Vice President for Retail.

Shell, the global leader in power, energy, and gas technology, recognizes the need to provide clean and bright facilities to its customers. Beginning May 12, staff will visit a site and work alongside retailers to improve site cleanliness. Volunteers will assess three key areas in Shell facilities: Cleanliness; Condition/Maintenance (whether the site is suitably maintained); and Compliant to Shell brand standards.

Mum’s two cents

It sure is very commendable to learn about big companies taking the initiative to give back to the people who supported them and patronize their products and services. Kudos to the people of Shell and Domex of Unilever for coming up with the 1Million Clean Toilets program. Now mums need not worry about their children having to pee in public toilets especially while on the road.

No Hope Lost: Raising Awareness On Pneumococcal + Rotavirus Diseases

I was fortunate to join fellow mum bloggers and other people from traditional media to witness the launch of GSK’s No Hope Lost Campaign held at the Makati Shangril-la’s Paranaque AB Hall earlier this month. The event was graced by Barbie’s Cradle vocalist, mum Barbie Almalbis, who shared her scary experience when one of her children got hospitalized due to pneumonia. Also present in the event is resource person, Dr. Sally Gatchalian, Director of the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination, who enlightened us about the importance of having our children vaccinated, as well as clarified certain myths about vaccines and vaccination.

Pneumonia and diarrhea are the top 2 leading causes of mortality among Filipino children less than 5 years of age and the scenario is very much similar with the rest of the world. Losing a child is the most-heartbreaking experience any mother could ever have, it is beyond imaginable, in fact, that thankfully parents, and society in general, is doing anything to prevent the loss of their children. It is also good to know that both diseases can be prevented through vaccination.

Pneumonia in a nutshell

An estimated 37 Filipino children die of pneumonia every single day. It is, in fact, the single greatest cause of death in children less than 5 years old worldwide. Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung that primarily affects the microscopic air sacs alveoli. This is an infection caused by the bacterium S. pneumoniae, or what is popularly known as pneumococcus, which in turn can lead to life-threatening conditions such as pneumonia. This bacterium can also result to Acute Otitis Media {or AOM}, a common and highly prevalent ear infection. When pneumococcus invades the blood, it can also result to severe medical conditions such as meningitis, complicated pneumonia, as well as sepsis or blood poisoning. These invasive forms of the pneumococcal disease are categorize into Invasive Pneumococcal Disease or IPD}.

please excuse the blurry image, my phone was under repair during this time i had to resort to my old smartphone…

Symptoms of pneumonia include:

  • rapid or difficult breathing
  • cough
  • fever
  • chills
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • wheezing

Diarrhea in a nutshell

Diarrhea is the second leading killer of children under 5 years of age globally. There is a registered 1.4 million child deaths yearly because of this disease. The common cause of diarrhea and severe dehydration in young children is Rotavirus Gastroenteritis {RVGE}. This is also the leading cause of diarrheal hospitalization and deaths among children and is considered most severe in infants aged 3-24 months.

Rotavirus is dubbed as a “democratic virus,” affecting virtually every child during the first 5 years of life, regardless of race or socio-economic status. In the Philippines, diarrhea is the second leading cause of child mortality resulting to more than 13 Filipino children dying due to diarrhea every day, or to almost 5,000 deaths yearly.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

Early protection is the key to prevent penumonia and rotavirus disease. No child has to die because of these diseases as they are both highly-preventable. Raising awareness about these diseases is a very effective way to combat them and hopefully eradicate them in the future.

Ways to Protect Children Against Pneumomia and Diarrhea:

  • breastfeeding
  • constant hand washing
  • cleaning your immediate environment and preventing air pollution
  • providing adequate nutrition
  • vaccination

Let Us Help The Victims Of Super Typhoon Yolanda

Philippines Today, news, current issues, Typhoon Yolanda, mum for a cause

A day after Super Typhoon Yolanda’s onslaught in Tacloban and other areas in Visayas, even the updates reaching the television networks are late due to the massive damage the storm, with its strong winds and violent storm surges, made to properties, infrastructures and communication facilities. Towns are flattened and more than 10,000 are feared to be dead. Most of the Visayas region has no electricity and assessment on the damage the storm made have yet to be  made. It sure was heartbreaking to see the news and see lonely images of loss, of frightened children, of hopelessness and sheer desperation.

Even authorities were distraught at how massive and wide the damages were and were appalled to even think of where to start. One official even mentioned that nobody can prepare for a storm such as Yolanda {international name: Haiyan}, which was considered to be one of the strongest storm to ever hit the country and the world. But as emergency meetings are set up, people are hungry in the streets while a lot of people remains to be found. Although relief operations were dispatched, as well as medical teams to help take care of the dead victims,  and policemen to help maintain peace and order, there are still many who are in need of our help.

Here are some of the ways in which you can extend help to our countrymen in Leyte and other affected areas:
